I've had girls discharge up to 10 weeks after whelp. Even with a POP shot and knowing that each placenta was presented.
It seems that pups never nurse on the bottom two nipples. But, what I was told they are somehow connected to the two above them and the milk is depeleted through them. In the first few days, I milk mom a bit and massage her nipples so that they remain soft and pliable. Whenever she has left the whelping area and wants to go back. I make sure that I wipe down her feet, privates and nipples with a baby wipe before she goes back in with her babies.
