All the small dog owners in the small dog park don't like him because he's "big" (i mean how big is a yorkie at 10 pounds anyway? he's still small!) and don't like him playing with them! while the big dogs love him, but he gets roughed up a lot. I just feel like Derby is discriminated against because he's a "big" Yorkie. If he was any other kind of dog at 10 pounds, it wouldn't matter. I know that I don't care, and I love that I don't have to worry about him getting badly hurt. he can jump up and down on the couch, and do up and down the stairs and play with bigger dogs... but any time I come across a Yorkie owner, or some snob who says "he's SO BIG!" i feel partly ashamed of him.
Why do i feel like that? It's like having a fat overweight kid. I feel like it's my fault that he's not within standard, even though my husband sought out a bigger Yorkie.
I love Derby, but he's constantly out growing his clothes and I'm in that stage of parenthood where I feel like- will you just stop growing already? No one will want to play with you if you keep getting bigger!!
I guess I'm tired of going to socialize him and no other small dog except bigger dog (as puppies) will play with him.
I want him to FIT IN. The poor guy needs friends!!!!

My first yorkie Barry was 17 lbs and over 16 inches high! I loved that dog to pieces - big or not! I know what you mean about fitting in, people always looked at me and said "he's not a yorkie."
His being different is what makes him special. Personally, I would try to explain to the small dog owners that while he's still a bit bigger he's still a small dog. Perhaps if you explain to them that you're concerned about him in the big dog pen because he
does get roughed around since is a small dog (duh) they might understand? Perhaps if you still focus on the fact that he's still small and its an issue they'll get it.
There are so many pluses to having a bigger yorkie.. don't let them get you down! (I miss the surprise lap/couch jumps. Winston is just a tad tooo small for those.)
