I think it depends on the dog. Some might prefer to be 'onlies'; and others would love a playmate. Ringo does well with Lucy - but probably would have been just as happy doing his own thing.
Don't think you are going to feel less guility going off to work - at first - when your new dog is still a puppy. That was my plan too and I feel guiltier than ever! Double the guilt!
However, I think when Lucy is older and I don't have to crate her so much when I am gone . . . they will be good company for each other. Then I plan on feeling less guilty!
