I don't think you are being over protective. I live in Ohio in the city and we still have coyote and fox and even hawks here. As a matter of fact, I was walking Jack a few weeks ago with a couple of our neighbors and their dogs when we stopped and were chatting. Just about that time a hawk came swooping down and landed across the street. Both the neighbors I was with warned me about the hawks and owls and how they are pretty bold around here.
So, yea, we can never be too careful with our little ones.
