That's what I did with Sydney's box. She was wee wee pad trained, and just this weekend I decided to try to get her to use a medium sized litter box with washable pads. I took the pad out so she could walk inside of it and sniff. I also gave her a treat for just getting in. It is like starting over, though. Hopefully it goes better the second time around.
