I have stairs up to my bed and all 6 dogs use them to go up and to go down. My smallest is 3#'s and she has never fallen out of bed...these little dogs do understand heights etc but their urge to be with you overcomes their fears so they will take risks....get the stairs and then you won't have to worry...
