I have three in long coats, and they are very active

. One especially loves to roll in anything that doesn't smell right, lol

I think it all depends on how easy their coat is to take care of. If mine had really difficult coats, I would not keep them long. I think it is personal preference and how the grooming time fits into your schedule. Right now, for me it takes approx 5-10 min each day for each one for brushing out and ponies.
They can play and run and roll, just as easily in a long coat as a short one, it doesn't matter to them, lol
