Joey's breeder said that the trick with long hair is to create a "pee string" and keep this about 2 inches long coming from penis area. It doesn't need to be very thick, but the pee string acts as a wick to guide urine away from coat hair. Here's more info on pee string, see "grooming urination area." Neutering does calm some dogs down so that they don't have so much "nervous energy," which can use lots of calories, and urine will not smell as strong.
