Renal failure can be managed sometimes for years. It all depends on the stage of it. I lost my Cody at the end of August. He had renal issues from the time I had adopted him four years earlier.
He was on kidney diet for years and most of the time it kept him pretty stable. There were some moments where he needed to be hospitalized over the past two years and then this year it escalated. Eventually it does get them, but often they can be managed, as I said, for long periods. Consult closely with your vet about what to feed. Turkey alone would not sound like the right choice due to the high protein. Many vets push Hills KD but I have always preferred Purina NF
In his last six months I cooked for him...it was a special diet that a veterinarian who is a nutritionist had made up for him.
Yes, low calcium can cause seizures.
In renal failure you see high levels of phosphorous...calcium will counter that. Many vets recommend Tums to replace the calcium.
Good luck to you. I know how upsetting it is to see them in the hospital, but when their levels are way out they do need IV fluids.
As to their appetites, there are many meds that can be given to stimulate the appetite. They also need meds to counteract the nausea that comes with renal failure.
I suggest you do a lot of reading. There is a lot on the web about renal failure in dogs. There are also lots of people on YT with knowledge about it.
