If you're looking into obedience training, I highly recommend clicker training. We used it with both our dogs and it really works. They catch on really quick and it's all positive reinforcement.
Our puppies can be a little stubborn at times so we'll need to do a correction once in awhile, but just a tshht noise gets them back on track. Clicker training really helped with that. They're just more responsive to us ever since.
