It does sound like he is a good dog. I can relate to your frustration because my 13 year old Dixie needs off our bed sometime in the middle of the night. Dixie is potty pad trained but she will not jump on or off the bed in the dark so I have to help her. We do have steps by our bed and she uses them just fine when the bedroom light is on. If he was not having to go in the middle of the night before I guess it is possible he could have a slight urinary infection. If it continues you might want to have the vet check him out to be sure. It could be, like you said, that you are just waking him up. Good luck with him.
