I don't understand this lady's attitude but it seems to be happening a lot lately.  Just down right mean people!  I really don't like other people to let their dogs run over to mine when they're on long leashes - they don't have control of them and don't realize that it doesn't take much for them to get hurt by the other dog, even if unintentionally -- unlike this situation.  But no - I don't think you're overly sensitive.    A couple of weeks ago we went to the indoor flea market and bought a zapper.  I wanted one that would take down a 150 pd pitbull.  The guy who sold it to us was waiting for me to say a 150 pd man... and was a little surprised when I said, no... I can do that with a baseball bat - I need this for when I walk my dogs.
