Ah! Now I see what you're trying to do. A remote would really be nice then, I'd bet you'd really appreciate having it, once you got one. I have one for my camera and it is really handy in certain situations.
As far as tripods, personally I don't believe in spending much $ - I got either the cheapest or next-to-cheapest one at Target and it's just fine for my D90, which is heavy compared to a non-DSLR, if that helps
