The ONLY time I put food in the crate is when I need Tucket to eat and I can't be there with him (he eats from my lap). Otherwise, I do not put food or water in the crate at all. Have you considered the potty patch? Someone even posted how to make one yourself. That might be an option...do you have a hard floor that you can put him on instead of your carpet? I have read that it can be confusing to dogs to go between a pee pad and outside which may cause you problems later. I don't know because I've crate trained both of mine and I'm a stay at home mom so I've been able to be consistent with them. Another option is crating during the day with water and having someone come and let him out once or twice and maybe even play with him before crating him again.
