My husband and I whelp our litters in a large wicker dog bed that we lay on top of our bed. The dog bed is completely covered with bedding and we use the disposable bed pads on top of the bedding. We make the room temperature pretty warm and there are no drafts. We leave the pups in the basket with the mom after they are born but we have a soft fleece blanket that we cover the pups with. When the mom starts to have another pup we will move the other pups to the other side of the basket and cover them with a fleece blanket. Between pups being delivered I do let the pups nurse. Once all the pups are born then I move the momma and her babies to an awaiting whelping box that has the heating pad covering half the whelping box.
