Some good advice here...
My two cents...stay away from Singer. I bought a Brother from Walmart for around $180.00 with lots of extra stitches and a walking foot (for quilting or sewing multi-layers) to carry to sewing classes. It's great and light weight. I have a Janome embroidery machine and it was too heavy to carry around. Janome is a good brand and they do make regular sewing machines.
I love to sew and serge!
