Checking at Walmart would be OK, just try and avoid the very cheapest models as they can be difficult to get adjusted so they sew correctly. Also, I have seen many complaints about today's Singer machines, I would look at a Brother or Janome. Features that would make your sewing life easier are, drop in bobbin, one-step buttonhole, zig-zag stitch, automatic tension adjustment. Many fabric and sewing stores offer beginning sewing classes. You would benefit from that to learn the basics. Good luck.
