Go to Wal Mart and check out their basic sewing machines. You will need straight stitch, zig zag stitch for finishing seams, etc. A button hole stitch would be great for making that finished "hole" in the top of a coat for the leash to attach to the harness.

I would not get a used machine, since you can get a simple new one for a very good price.
