yeah i think they have emotions too. My friend's rescue dog is still terrified of anyone with heavy feet.
What i dont think they can do is make a connection between something they do now and a much later, seemingly unconnected response.
eg i'm sure my puppy understands that when she picks up my shoes in front of me to chew i get annoyed, (and sometimes she does do it delibrately to get a response) but if i got home and found something had been chewed while i was out and then got angry, she wouldnt be able to make the connection between my anger and her actions.
