I think (but can't possibly really know, of course) that that is because Little Bit lives with my parents and their older dog, Maggie. Maggie has ALWAYS gotten up and gone out in the middle of the night. Since she was about 6 months old (she's now a little over 6 years) she has just gone outside and sniffed the air then come back in. However, when Mom and Dad are out of town and Maggie stays with us, she sleeps all night because we're NOT doing the recreational outside-in-the-middle- of-the-night thing and she knows it. |
The inadvertent training came to mind to me too. There are things Trace does that we didn't intentionally train him to do. For instance, my husband takes him out first thing in the morning, then he comes back inside.....he runs back into the bedroom, waits for my husband to pick him up and put him back in the bed w/ me. My husband says Trace even hops up a little to help him pick him up

It's Trace's morning routine and he's learned it.
Btw, they start sleeping through the night the minute you let them sleep WITH you....kidding...but we (or me anyway) finally got some sleep this way.
