I keep Antibiotic eye ointment on hand at all times. When any eyes show mucous or redness on the upper or lower lids I apply it 2x daily for 5 days.
If at any time it looks worst, say after 2-3 applications, I take them to the vet. Nomally this clears up any problems. Also, I've heard the brown gook can come from too much protein in the diet. Ask your vet about that if you go. And you shouldn't use anything in or around the eye that is not made specifically for treating the eye. Other meds/ointments may be too strong and cause more harm. And never use Visine or any people products except like Natural Tears or similar, non medicated products.
