we used black vinyl mesh. Came in a role from Home Depot. We used 2inch by 2inch treated wood for posts. ours is 24inches high but the roles came higher as well, like 36" and 48". I would go at least 36" if you want to keep him in it unsupervised or 48 if he is a jumper. Our mesh squares are about one inch in size. The black actually looks nice. It doesn't look like orange construction fencing or anything tacky like that.
