I have had the same problem and had to take him to the vet. He was on an eye ointment for a week and the vet suggested a flea comb to remove the eye gunk and to put a little vaseline in the corner of the eyes to keep the hair from irritating it. And it has worked for me. What makes it red and irritating is the gunk just sitting their in the corner because it harbors alot of bacteria.
