If you put a stop on that check then the bank already charged you for that, if that check went through anyway, then you better call your bank, it's definitely NOT your fault. I have never heard of someone charging you 10x more than what the original check was for tell them NOW your going to sue them for that amount, just for the aggravation they put you through
Don't let anyone push you around, get on the phone and start demanding answers to this. I think it's terrible this person is not helping you. I am sorry if she is going through personal problems, that is no excuse to leave you like this and just never get back to you.
She ruined her own reputation. I hope you get this resolved, I am so sorry
