I could be wrong, but I think they are trying to "strong arm" you. They are responsible for cashing the check, and they need to collect from the person they gave the money to. They can try to make you pay, but are you liable? Please check this out before you give them one red cent.
I agree with this post, if you placed a stop payment before the check was cashed, you are not liable, get with your bank on this.
