I worked at a bank for 17 years, and something doesn't sound quite right here. If you placed a stop payment on the check, I don't see how you could be responsible for the money.

I could be wrong, but I think they are trying to "strong arm" you. They are responsible for cashing the check, and they need to collect from the person they gave the money to. They can try to make you pay, but are you liable? Please check this out before you give them one red cent.
