I really have no expertise at all in this because our baby came potty trained just from watching her mother. However, I do have a suggestion. Of course, it's possible you have already tried it.
If there is a particular spot you can pinpoint as the place your pet loves to soil, I would put a pad there. It may look out of place but then you can move it a little each day until it eventually gets to the place you want.
I have no idea if this will work or not but it follows the theory of building on past learning and starting with something they know.
