I'm a new Yorkie mommy, so forgive my lack of knowledge about a lot of these things... but how could a breeder ever be certain that a puppy would stay small? While the mother and father may have both been small, and the puppy may have been very small at birth, the genetics of breeding means that a puppy's size could be determined by an ancestor several generations ago. DNA and genetics works the same way in dogs as it does in humans, so how could a breeder know about the puppy's genetic make-up that determines size unless the breeders had DNA testing done on the pup that examined the isolated genome for size.
But like I said... I'm a new Yorkie mommy, so maybe I'm missing something here. I'd love to hear more about how breeders can claim to know what size an puppy will end up being as an adult, especially since the Yorkie breed was originally sooo much larger and this is expressed in some Yorkies even today.
