Actually, if someone stole one of my dogs and wanted to keep it, and they tried to go to a vet with them, the microchip comes up registered to ME. Also, if I think I know who took my dog, I only need to produce his paperwork and ask the police to take the dog to a vet to be scanned and that would PROVE it was mine, more than "he has a tattoo on his belly" which anyone could see and claim. That chip comes back to MY name.
Please, get your dog microchipped instead of tattooed.
