when they are young they can't hold it for long; i used to take mine to the pee pad every few hrs. i used to wake up around 3 or 4am to take her to the pad. however, now she has a pad in the playpen where she sleeps and she goes whenever she needs to. if you train ur puppy to go on the pee pad then place one in the playpen (not sure about the crate) then she will learn to go by herself; i highly recommend the playpen; it has been a life and time saver for us.
