I bought potty pads so I wouldn't have to take her out in the middle of the night just because I live in an apartment in Chicago and don't exactly feel safe doing that, but she doesn't seem to grasp the concept of those. I have even cleaned up some of her pee with the pads so she could smell her scent on them

When we first got Samson, we kept him in a bathroom with a baby gate while we were at work and he had a bed, water, toys and a pee pad. He really seemed to understand that he was to go on the pee pad when he was in the bathroom. Most of the time, he would go #1 on the pad, but we started to think he didn't like to go on them more than two times because while he was going on the pad, he was also going on the floor. Or if he went #1 on the pad, he wouldn't go #2. Once he got big enough, he learned to jump into our bathtub and he started going in there. This is when we figured out that he REALLY didn't like to be around his own mess - haha!!
However, once he was out of the bathroom in the evenings once we came home, he never went back to them to use them. We were told that he might've been confusing our carpet for the pee pad (both being soft). So we stopped with the pads, sucked it up and have trained him to go outside.
And now...if we are going to be gone for long periods of time, we leave him in the bathroom still but we don't leave a pee pad for him. If he really really HAS to go, he jumps into the bathtub, does his business and hops right back out. LOL!!

It really is hilarious. Most of the time, though, even when he's in the bathroom and can go if he has to, he doesn't. He has really learned to hold it. He's wonderful
