When I have something I need to give one of the dogs and they are not cooperating, I sit on a low chair and put the dog between my knees, facing away from me. Place the dog low enough between your legs that it cannot lean or swivel around (about shoulder high on the dog). Hold your legs tight together, and this gives you both hands to use on the dog. Gently pull the head slightly back towards you and slip the syringe in the side of the mouth and give the dog the medicine or fluids.
If the dog wriggles out or you can't keep your knees together that long, just stop and start from the beginning again. Try to be as calm as possible and the dog will learn that struggle is useless when mommy puts her in this position.
Oh, and this position is great for trimming ears too. Good luck.
