One more thought about the house-breaking. It would be interesting to know if the previous owner kept him inside or out. If he's not housebroken because he was an outside dog, this actually *helps* you. In that case, he's used to the feel of grass under his feet when he potties. He would potty-train faster than an inside dog who was never trained.
