I never did anything to my Yorkie's ears and they eventually stood up all on their own. He is over a year now and I have never touched his ears. I like them with all the hair on them. Some Yorkie's, especially the larger ones, have ears that never stand up. If you are not going to show your dog, it really doesn't make any difference whether they are up or down. For a long time my dog had one ear up and one down, which I thought was really cute.
