As Topknot says; there's a lot to growing a show coat. Genetics, texture, nutrition and cleanliness. No, you don't have to have them in a crate, but a lot of extra care goes into it. As far as wrapping a cotton or wooly coat, I wouldn't start wrapping your pup at this point, let it be a pup. Also, on cotton coats it's best to wrap with plastic.
