I know this may sound extreme, but have you considered popping out a window somewhere? If you have a newer home with an opening large enough, this is actually a lot easier than you would think....it doesn't alter the structure of your home like taking down the wall around the door frame.
Oh, and 'been there, done that,' only my shining moment involved a queen size box spring that wouldn't fit up a narrow, winding staircase.
