I agree that facial furnishings on a puppy are a challenge. I've found that the deeper the gold the harder it seems to grow it. I band Ace's as well. He loves to play tugawar with Lizzie and it does take a toll on the hair of the muzzle. They are puppies and they need to play and be with the other dogs though. I have a gal that I rescued, she grew up alone in a cage. I would never want to do that to a dog just so I could have the pleasure of seeing it's facial furnishings long.
