In the second photo above the bow is open. You just lay the hair against the elastic piece that is BETWEEN the two snaps. (The other elastic piece is a tab to pull on to open the snap.) Once the hair is on the elastic between the snaps, you just fold the elastic over and snap it closed. So it's sort of like "pinching" the hair into the folded elastic. Sorry, I'm not explaining it very well, lol. But it is really quick and easy... and it actually stays in Sophie's hair. I don't think it will be damaging either because the hair is simply tucked into wide elastic, not being pulled on or rubbed against.
