The guys at Best buy told me the D5000 is new...last month? And its between the D60 and D90, so thats what sold me. Better ( not saying the d60 is bad..just what they said!!!) then the d60 but under the d90.
I have NO CLUE what I'm doing but I will say...the lens that came with, does zoom much at all so I'm glad I got another.

I think they look really good- Play with the Av (or maybe A for you mode) and with your f numbers- if you bring them WAY down- your pups face will be in sharp focus and the background with be blurred. If i don't shoot in automatic mode- i shoot in aperture mode. Also, I know when I upload my picture to my computer- I edit them- which is probably why the color looks more sharp. Do you have a Mac? i know iphoto has some editing fuctions. When i save up enough money i am going to get Lightroom- an editing program.
