i used to think that way ; until my dog chewed up the carpet, the dinning room table and chairs and ended up with hemoraging gastritis; it ruined her stomach; so the vet told me that i am doing her more harm than good by leaving her loose in the house; she was actually damaging herself. after 2 years and 2 expensive episodes with hospital stay; i learned to leave her in her pen when i am not at home; now i cant keep her away from it; it's like her own castle; she loves it; she has her bed, pee pad and water bowl. i understand that it might seem cruel to leave them in the pen; however as long as it's not a kennel or a tight cage, it's actually safer for them, as they dont' know what's good for them when left alone. good luck
