Most places have the size charts, and tell you exactly where to measure. The size charts were accurate for Joey, I got the size three, and he's 5 1/2 pounds, I can use it on the tightest hole when he's wearing it without clothes, but I also place it over his clothes, and on bulkier items such as a hoodie, he will go down a couple of notches. So I think you have around 3-4 inches to play with.
