Have the owners had the opportunity to call Animal Control? They can tell you what dogs have been picked up and taken to the shelter in the last 24 hours. In our area many people will take lost pets to Wayside Waifs...please ask them to check there as well.
Many pets are also discovered by well intentioned neighbors. Perhaps a flyer placed on the door of the homes in a few blocks surrounding the house would be helpful?
