Default trachea collapse

Bentley, my 12 year old yorkie, has been having an awful time breathing because of a collapsed trachea. We had to bring him to the emergency vet this week-end. Then Monday our regular vet suggested a surgeon to put in a stent. So we are going to see the surgeon. But our refular vet says the stent is an iffy procedure - sometimes the dog wiggles it loose and then it is much worse. Please. Anybody have any feedback on this?
