So sad to read this whole story. I'm guessing the puppy was dropped, stepped on or kicked.

I cannot believe that your friend took a check?

The dog that was taken to the ER might not have even been the same puppy. It coluld have been a puppy this woman bought from somewhere else, that got sick and she thought of this way to get a free replacement.

I neve take checks for final payment, just for deposit.
