You will LOVE a 50mm Prime lens!! Is it the Nikkor 50mm 1.8? Fun fun fun. I have it too - it's probably one of the most loved lenses around bc of its quality for price.
The 1.8 means, you can open your aperture wide...alllllll the way open to f1.8 - and then you'll have lots of "bokeh" (blurred background). On the other end, if you close your aperture down say to f15 - you have a teensy opening and everything will be in focus (like for landscapes).
The flash is just for Nikons - but if you
look here , you'll get an idea of what we're talking about. I wonder what the Canon equiv. would be for an attachable, small flash....anyone?
