Default Preface

** Jacob Black **

I felt the burn of my muscles as I pushed them to their limit, still urging them to propel me faster. All the while I watched the grisly scene before me unfold through Seth’s eyes. He searched frantically for Renesme, but she was no where in sight. The air was heavy with turmoil in every direction and a heavy, purple-black smoke hung in the air. The woods flew past me in a green blur as I collided with smaller trees, leaving them to fall in my wake. I knew there were brief periods during my run where I could have been seen by bewildered eyes, but I didn’t care—maybe rumors of bears in Forks would begin to circulate again soon. My only focus at this point was to take the most direct route as quickly as possible to my destination.

I felt Seth’s panic as he watched the cloaked figures threatening to overtake the heart of their opponents. As they began to close in, I watched as he flanked Paul and charged towards the mass of shrouded vampires. I knew that the most talented vampires would be the main targets--Kate, Benjamin, Zafrina, Emmett, Edward...and Bella. I knew that the packs would align themselves around those individuals. The ground beneath Seth shook as he collided with one of the dark stone figures. In one fluid motion he was back on his feet, turning to make another pass towards the enemies as they overtook the center of our resistance. And then, every ounce of my blood ran cold as he caught sight of Edward.

Edward dropped to his knees, his hands clenching his hair on each side as he raised his face to the sky. As his lips parted, the air was filled with a tortured cry so full of anguish that the very Earth stood still on its axis. There was only one thing in this universe that could have caused him to react so.. I knew at that moment that I was too late…I knew that Bella was gone.

I jerked upright, eyes wide and sweat dripping from my head. My reaction was instinctual. I flung myself from bed and tore through the house, throwing myself out the front door with such force that it nearly too it off its hinges. I’d phased completely before ever hitting the ground as I cleared the porch stairs. I had to see for myself. I knew that like all the times before, Renesme would be sleeping soundly in her bed and the rest of the family would be deeply involved in whichever activity held their attention at the time. They would turn to me with worried expressions as they always did, calming my fears and Dr. Fang would pass it off as a result of some sort of post traumatic stress, but still, I had to know….had to see for myself.

So, as the sun threatened to rise over the mountains in the distance, I concentrated on the sound of my four enormous paws beating a steady rhythm on the forest floor as I headed in the direction of the big, white house in the woods.
