Sounds a little bit like it could be nervousness/separation anxiety. When I was younger, we had a dog that would nibble on the baseboard moulding whenever we left because she was chronically anxious. If there's certain spots they like, you can try spraying the area with bitter apple spray--that worked for us. I think you also got good suggestions about boredom, maybe try leaving a Kong with some Kibble or some more difficult to eat treat in it to keep them occupied for a while.
