Does it go away on its own? Is it like humans? how long should we expect this? Are there special things we should do to at least treat the cold part of this?
It can take weeks to months for kennel cough to go away if that is the rpoblem.
You can ask your vet what cough meds and such should be given if it doesn't start getting better.

If he starts throwing up or has more diarrhea/bloody stool, other things like parvo would be a concern.

You can give a bland diet to try and settle things in there, but chicken and rice sure won't do a thing for worms and the like. Pedialyte and Pediasure are also possibilities, but it most likely won't help to fix the underlying problem.
