How often do you groom him? If you have time you should be doing it everyday. I do Libbies once every two days or so. Some people may say you can't do this but when I had this problem with Libbie it worked for me best. After I gave her a bath I started to comb or use my fingers to untangle her hair. It took a while but it worked. . You can also try leave-in conditioner. If its really bad it might be best if the groomer handles it and most likely they'll shave him down a bit.

I always comb Josh's hair before washing him. I also detangle Josh's hair before blow-drying his hair. If Josh gets knots in his hair, I work with a layer at a time combing a few inches from the ends until I am able to reach the roots. Then I comb that layer again to make sure all the knots are gone. Using detangling spray can help getting knots out of dog's hair.
