I have a few pups with LP and none have required surgery. The ortho specialist I have used for other conditions cautions against having LP surgery too soon.

I had a yorkie who lived to be around 16 (he was a rescue and we were never certain of his age, but I had him for 10 years). He had LP all of that time and never needed surgery. He was on Metacam at times if it acted up, but it would improve and he would be fine for long periods. I have seen a couple of people here say they have had problems with Metacam, but I have not. Just be sure to give it with food!
